New Delhi/IBNS: India, which is suddenly witnessing a spike in Novel Coronavirus cases in some parts, on Tuesday reported over 10,000 fresh infections.

The country of 1.3 billion people reported 10,584 new cases in 24 hours between Monday and Tuesday mornings, taking the overall tally to 1,10,16,434.

As per the Union Health Ministry's update, the Covid-19 toll has surged to 1,56,463 with 78 fatalities apparently due to the virus in the same period.

The number of recoveries has increased to 1,07,12,665.

Though India, which has reasonably performed better in tackling the pandemic situation than the western world, has been reporting of late a spike in some parts which include Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Punjab.

Among the 36 states and union territories, Maharashtra topped the number of daily cases with over 5,000 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, followed by Kerala's 2,212.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will on Tuesday hold a meeting with the commissioner and officials of Mumbai's municipal corporation to review the Covid-19 situation.

Though Thackeray has already warned that a lockdown may be imposed if the daily cases continue to rise over the next two weeks, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal told CNBC TV 18 on Monday, "We are not planning a even single new restriction but we will go for an extremely strict implementation and adherence to the existing SOPs for the Covid-19 condition."
