Maharashtra: Water situation grim in Marathwada

Aurangabad, Apr 3 (UNI) Water situation has been worsening day by day across Maharashtra's Marathwada region as the ground water level is depleting due to severe drought, prompting authorities to deploy tankers.

Last week, 2,063 tankers were deployed to supply water to 1,538 villages and 554 hamlets to 33.55 lakh people across the eight districts of Marathwada region. This week, additional 33 water tankers were deployed to meet drinking water needs of the people, a report released from Divisional Commissioner Office (DCO) said..

After the deployment of 33 additional water tankers, a total of 2,096 water tankers are plying in 1,564 villages and 571 hamlets covering 33.90 lakh people.

Aurangabad district is worst-hit by drought and 894 water tankers are deployed to meet the drinking water needs of 14 lakh people residing in 615 villages and 237 hamlets, the report added.

The report further read that 639 water tankers are now deployed in 492 villages and 230 hamlets of Beed districts and Jalna's 296 villages and 74 hamlets are receiving relief through 355 water tankers.

Osmanabad district's 76 villages and one hamlet are getting water through 93 tankers.

The district of Nanded has fleet of 57 water tankers deployed against 40 villages and 18 hamlets. While Hingoli, Latur and Parbhani district are getting water through 26, 20 and 18 tankers respectively, the report said.
