Spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall continues to hit Gujarat

Gandhingar, Aug 27 (UNI) About 144 talukas in 25 districts of east central Gujarat received heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday, with Chhota Udepur recording the maximum shower at 166 mm.

Due to two days of heavy and incessant rainfall, rivers and rivulets in and around Chhota Udepur district have surged. Rivers like Orsang, Hiran, Kara and Ashwin were virtually flooding.

Several roads and causeways in central Gujarat were reported to be waterlogged. In Gadh Boriyad area under Naswadi taluka of Chhota Udepur district a car carrying four people washed away. However, the passengers were rescued safely.
Among other prominent rain receiving talukas today, Jetpur Pavi recorded 156 mm rainfall, Halol 158mm, Quant 155mm, Anand 93mm, Jambughoda 68mm, Sankheda 62mm and Vadodara city 61 mm each. "37 talukas have seen over 25 mm or rain till 2 pm," MeT Department reported.

Ahmedabad city which had seen 7 mm or average rain overnight has seen 16 mm more from 0600 hrs to 1200 hrs on Tuesday. In the last 24 hours, a total of 135 talukas of 22 districts had seen rain with highest 93 mm in Chhota Udepur. Quant had seen 89 mm, Morva Hadaf 79, Godhara 78, Dahod 77, Khanpur 72 ,Umerpada 70 Vadodara 46 and Surat city 41 mm.

Met department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in central and north Gujarat region with spells of extremely heavy fall in Chhota Udepur and Panchmahal districts in the next 24 hours.

IMD Ahmedabad Director Jayanta Sarkar said that it is due to the presence of a shear zone as part of an upper air cyclonic circulation, adding that there would be wide-spread rainfall mainly in East Central and North Gujarat region with districts like Vadodara, Anand, Kheda, Dahod, Mahisagar, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Mahesana, Sabarkhantha and Banaskantha along with some extremely heavy falls in Chhota Udepur and Panchmahal.

Another low pressure area is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal on August 29. The state has so far seen over 91 per cent of its total seasonal average rainfall.
