Two cases of Omicron coronavirus strain reported in Latvia
Riga/UNI/Xinhua: A private lab in Latvia reported on Monday that it has identified two samples as the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, according to local media report.
The samples had been taken from two travellers who arrived at Riga Airport on an international flight on December 4, a representative of E.Gulbis Laboratory said.
The lab confirmed the Omicron cases by sequencing the two coronavirus samples that did not match the pattern of the Delta variant. The samples were analyzed using the Sanger sequencing method, the laboratory said.
The laboratory reported the results to the Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). The cases will be further analyzed in accordance with the algorithm set by the CDC and the National Microbiology Reference Laboratory.
