Kolkata/IBNS: Kolkata based 150 bedded multi-speciality Spandan Hospital saved the life of two month old baby boy Joyraj Pal from Covid-19.

Spandan is the first private hospital of Kolkata to set up its own Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for COVID treatment.

Baby Joyraj was admitted under consultant neonatologist and paediatrician Dr. Sumanta Bhattacharya on Nov 12, 2020.

Dr Sumanta Bhattacharya said, "Patient was admitted with high grade fever for nearly three days along with several episodes of convulsion and loose motion. We did all the necessary blood tests along with RTPCR SARS-Covid 19 test from the throat and nasopharyngeal swab.

"Survey says the number of corona infected children in Kolkata below 8 years is very rare. Initially the baby was in a normal NICU set up but had to be shifted to an isolation unit as he was tested Covid positive and had severe respiratory distress. Joyraj was in support of capillary blood gas as he was detected with severe metabolic acidosis. Baby was presenting in the form of acidotic breathing, pH was approximately 7 and bicarbonate level was 6.5.

"We had to start with low molecular weight heparin as the d-Dimer level was deranged and CRP was very high. Gradually the patient responded well. It took six days to make the patient stable and out of danger and was discharged on 18th of November."

Spandan recorded 89% cure rate in Covid cases till now with a set up of 40 Covid and isolation beds and COVID ICU with all modern facilities.

Hospital PRO Subhajit Chowdhury shared, "We are trying to offer the best service at minimum cost so that patients of every financial category can afford to get treated here. Our covid-19 treatment package is also nominal."

Medical Superintendent of Spandan Hospital Dr Kaustubh Ray said, "Apart from this success story of Joyraj, we are glad to share with you that a maximum number of octogenarian patients are getting cured in our hospital. We will continue to strive further to help ailing people with our dedicated team of healthcare workers, fighting relentlessly in such an alarming and trying situation of a global pandemic."
