Kolkata/IBNS: Amid the New Year celebrations, over 3,000 COVID-19 cases have been reported in West Bengal in the last 24 hours.

In an increase in daily positive cases by 62 percent, 3,451 fresh infections were reported in the eastern state on Friday.

In the same span of time, seven people have died apparently due to the contagion.

Among 3,451, 1,954 infections were reported from Kolkata, where people have been celebrating the ongoing festival season for about a week.

The state government on Thursday suspended all flights from the United Kingdom from Jan 3, 2022 owing to the spread of coronavirus and its new variant 'Omicron'.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has asked her officials to assess the situation, has hinted at the temporary closure of schools to stem the COVID-19 spread.

However, Banerjee said no blanket curb on all activities will be imposed considering the economy, which has already been battered by the earlier two lockdowns.

Meanwhile, preparation for the civic polls in four regions of the state are in full swing amid the coronavirus threat.
