Rajat Kapoor's 'Macbeth', a social satire, wows Kolkata

Kolkata, Dec 5 (IBNS) Macbeth, one of Shakespeare's tragedies about a brave soldier turning into a tyrant in the lust for continued dominance, received a new twist as Bollywood actor and director Rajat Kapoor served it fresh to the people of Kolkata on Friday, here at the GD Birla Sabhaghar.

'What is done is done' is a modern take on the age old play, with Ranvir Shorey, Kalki Koechlin, Vinay Pathak and Tillotama Shome dishing out strong performances.

Almost any play with such a lineup is bound to do well and did so, but what kept the audience ticking was the practical one liners with their subtle disguise.

Shorey portraying the lead, was a treat to watch as was Kalki, Tillotama and Sheena Khalid, who all played Lady Macbeth.

Vinay Pathak and Sim Sarbh who had the most funny lines, delivered a critical commentary towards the end that touched topics such as rape, hatred and intolerance.

The crowd too wasn't void of star power, as Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Swastika Mukherjee and the director Rajat Kapoor each sat with the others who had come to watch the play.

The director took freedom to change certain characters and scenes from the actual play, and introduced new ones, his own.

This was also What is done is done's premiere production.
