Kolkata, Nov 5 (IBNS): As part of the nationwide observance of Vigilance Awareness Week on the theme of ‘Public Participation in Promoting Integrity and Eradicating Corruption’ from Oct 31 to Nov 5, SAIL’s Kolkata-headquartered Central Marketing Organisation (CMO) organized various events involving school and college students and its own employees and their families.

Slogan and Essay writing and Poster drawing competitions among school students of Kolkata generated enthusiastic response.

A debate competition on the theme – ‘Corruption is a necessary evil for success in any sphere' was organized for school children at Apeejay School, Kolkata on Nov 3.

A large number of students were present as audience and cheered the 10 participants – 6 from Apeejay and 4 from Lakshmipat Singhania School.

The debate was lively, and the arguments and counter arguments presented by the speakers, both for and against the motion, were focused, incisive, logical and thought-provoking.

Prizes were awarded to the three best speakers and consolation prizes were given to all the participants.

In a special programme organised the same afternoon at Ispat Bhavan, ladies were invited to share their views on the topic ‘Corruption-free India: Myth or Reality’. Several women employees from various departments and wives of CMO executives participated in the programme.

Most participants felt that while a corruption-free India is a myth, the reality is that corruption is dying a gradual death with people’s heightened awareness, the proliferation of social media in which ‘naming and shaming’ is increasing, and the rise in use of electronic avenues for financial transactions.

This was followed by an on-the-spot quiz contest held for the audience in which India through the ages was revisited. Prizes were awarded to the top three speakers and consolation prize was distributed to the participants.

A quiz contest was also arranged at Hazra Law College, Kolkata on Nov 4.

The event saw wholehearted participation from the students along with necessary support from the college administration and faculty. The programme started with a welcome address by Dean and Professor of the college J.K. Das.

Dibyendu Chowdhury, AGM, Vigilance, CMO in his keynote address appraised the gathering about the functioning of CMO Vigilance and elaborated on how it acts as the watchdog in upholding organizational values in every operational area.

As many as 12 teams of three members each took part in the quiz contest which featured questions in the areas of Vigilance, Law, General Knowledge, Current Affairs and also included a very interesting Audio-Visual round. Prizes were awarded to the winning teams.

On Nov 5, at the closing ceremony of Vigilance Awareness Week, trophies and cash prizes were distributed to the winners of the slogan, essay and poster competitions by senior CMO officials – ED (M-FP) P.K. Mishra, ED (M-LP) Shri B. Chongdar and GM (Vigilance) & ACVO G. Upadhyay.

CMO offices across the country also observed Vigilance Awareness Week through various activities, including talks and interactive sessions with leading social luminaries.
