Uttar Pradesh: Teacher's Remediation Efforts Transform under-performing students at government primary school

Gorakhpur/Uttar Pradesh: A primary school teacher in Uttar Pradesh, India, is turning around the academic performance of underprivileged students through remediation. Nirmala Singh, a mathematics and Hindi teacher at Government Primary School Khairaila, is utilizing the NIPUN scheme, launched by the Union Ministry of Education, to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy skills among students in classes one to three.

Identifying around 30 students who required extra help, Nirmala employed a screening process infused with empathy to ensure the students did not develop an inferiority complex, stated Gaon Connetion.

By creating a comfortable and confident environment, she established rapport with the students by engaging them in conversations about their interests and encouraging them to express themselves in class.

Moving away from traditional blackboard teaching, Nirmala adopted a personalized approach by writing questions in individual notebooks. This approach allowed her to cater to students with varying levels of comprehension, providing simpler explanations for those struggling to grasp concepts.

Nirmala's dedication extended beyond regular class hours, as she spent an additional half-hour after school for revision and to address any doubts.

The benefits of Nirmala's remediation efforts are already evident. Previously struggling students like Sultan and Shivani have made significant progress in their studies, with Sultan now excelling in mathematics and Shivani confidently performing double-digit addition.

Additionally, the remedial measures have helped bridge the gaps caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring students stayed on track despite lacking access to online learning resources.

Nirmala's commitment to her students is rooted in her own humble background and the importance of education in her life. Raised in a financially disadvantaged family, she understands the value of learning and strives to provide the same opportunities to her students.
