Meghalaya House hosts Piskot Festival in Kolkata
Kolkata, Nov 29 (IBNS): The Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with Indian Chamber of Commerce is holding a festival of the exotic vegetable piskot here at the Meghalaya House from Saturday.
The festival is focused on the promotion of the Excotic Vegetable Piskot from the Meghalaya. The Government of Meghalaya also displayed the other Agriculture & Horticulture products of Meghalaya during the Festival.
The Piskot Festival 2014 was inaugurated by Meghalaya Rural Development Minister P Tynsong.
B. Rumnong, Deputy Director, State Institute of Rural Development highlighted the fact that Meghalaya is producing the highest quantity of Piskot in the country with around 50000 MT of production every year without any Government schemes, subsidies or support to the farmers. He also highlighted that with the proper support and funding from Government the state can alone raise the production of Piskot to more 100000 MT which will meet the future demand for Piskot in Domestic and International Market.
Dr Nene, Ex Scientist, National Chemical Laboratories and Subject Expert in Piskot pointed out various health benefits to the Consumers and how one can value add to the Piskot.
C B Singh, Regional Head, APEDA, focused on the supply chain, transportation, shelf life and storage infrastructure to be created for Piskot in West Bengal.
According to Dr Singh, to ensure the better quality and varieties of value added products to be made out of Piskot to match with the International Demand. He requested for the assistance from Government of Meghalaya towards the procurement and logistics of the Piskot from Meghalaya to Kolkata and creation of the Storage Capacity near Kolkata for better connectivity with the Domestic & International Market.
