India celebrates 69th Independence Day

New Delhi/Mumbai/Kolkata/Chennai, Aug 15 (IBNS) From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, millions of Indians remembered freedom fighters as the country celebrated its 69th Independence Day on Saturday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of Red Fort.

PM Modi tweeted: "Independence Day greetings to all my fellow Indians."

Chief Ministers celebrated the day in their own states across the nation.

They also took to social networking sites to greet fellow countrymen.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Let us think with unity, speak with unity and work with unity. Happy Independence Day and heartiest greetings and best wishes to all."

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also greeted the nation on the occasion of Independence Day.

Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan said: "Warm greetings to all on the 69th #IndependenceDay. We solemnly pledge to fulfill the dreams of our freedom fighters."

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh tweeted: "On our #IndependenceDay I salute our great freedom fighters & congratulate all with my appeal to be with me on our duty of nation building."

Keeping in mind the celebrations and the occasion, security has been heightened across India on Saturday.

Since morning, special shows are being shown across new channels while radio stations are busy playing patriotic songs.

Common men and celebrities from different fields of life also greeted the nation on the occasion of  Independence Day.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's office tweeted: "Happy Independence Day to everyone!"

Actor Amitabh Bachchan posted: " Happy Independence Day 2015."

Actor Anuipam Kher said: "I salute all those great people who fought for our Independence. Thank you for our FREEDOM. Happy Independence Day.:) "

This year's Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna  award winner Tennis star Sania Mirza posted: "Khel Ratna ,in the semi finals at the Rogers cup and a very Happy Independence Day India It's a good day."

Badminton icon Saina Nehwal said:"Join me in saluting the real heroes of our country - our soldiers. #SaluteSelfie."

Former Indian captain Anil Kumble tweeted: "On this #IndependenceDay, let's all salute those who made this freedom possible; let's cherish & respect it."

Popular internet search engine Google India also joined the mood of celebration by decorating its homepage with  a doodle showing the Dandi March.

The doodle showed Mahatma Gandhi and several followers walking behind him.

Gandhi had started the  Dandi March  on Mar 12, 1930.
