Kolkata pays homage to the legend Pankaj Mullick

Kolkata, Sept 24 (IBNS): A day before Mahalaya, a special programme- 'Durga Mahima'- was organized in Kolkata.

This was an adaptation of the iconic radio programme, 'Mahishasuramardini', an oratorio comprising songs and narrations, which has become an integral part of the Bengali Puja culture.

It was a tribute to the legendary music composer and the lead singer of Mahishasuramardini late Pankaj Kumar Mullick.

The uniqueness of Durga Mahima lied in the fact that several songs that were heard during the live broadcast of Mahishasuramardini in the period of 1931-1961 and are no longer heard in the recorded version that is played at present, were resurrected and presented live during the programme.

Pankaj Mullick's grandson Rajib Gupta said, “In this narration we have simplified the older version. It is done for the purpose of reviving those musical works that has gone away from the public memory. The programme was also held in Delhi and Mumbai previously and we received a phenomenal reaction from the audience”.

Talking about his grandfather, he proudly said: “It takes effort to become a singer or even a composer of his caliber.”

When asked about his views over the modern presentation of the Mahishasuramardini, Rajib said, “I am all in favour of music getting disseminated in various ways.”

The programme was organized by Rajib Gupta and his wife Jhinuk Gupta of Pankaj Mullick Music & Art Foundation. The principal performers in this programme were singers Saikat Mitra and Jhinuk Gupta and orator Rajib Gupta.
