Kolkata, Feb 21 (IBNS): The US Consulate in Kolkata arranged a special programme on Thursday to mark the Black History Month in Kolkata's American Center.

Black History Month is also known as African-American History Month in US. This is an annual observance in the US, Canada, and the UK to remember the important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. The US celebrates it in February every year. All of the US Consulates worldwide including Kolkata Consulate are celebrating this Black History Month through several programmes.

US Consul General Helen LaFave, Director of the American Center JJ Joria and Deputy Director of the American Center Greg Pardo were present at the event.

After the welcome address, Greg Pardo read out the book Martin Luther King Day to the students of the US Department funded Micro Access scholarship program.

Seventy students from 13  schools and colleges of Kolkata including Jawharlal Nehru Vidyapith for Boys, Shree Jain Vidyalaya, South Calcutta College, Jogmaya Devi College, Vivekananda College etc participated in the programme.

Students staged the play Ebony and Ivory. They also presented a hip-hop as a medium of cultural expression which originated in African-American communities and showcased a power point presentation tracing Black History of America over the ages.

The US Consulate Kolkata will arrange another programme on Feb 26 to culminate this month long celebration.
