Indian child sex trafficking documentary ‘From the Shadows’ screened in Kolkata
Kolkata: Filmmaker Miriam Chandy Menacherry's documentary 'From the Shadows', a film that deals with the survivors of a powerful criminal racket that trafficks minor girls for sex work, was screened in Kolkata's American Center on Monday.
The film tried to showcase the grim reality of sex trafficking in the country.
Speaking of the film, Juan Clar, Acting Director of the American Center said, “We were glad to see the screening of this anti-trafficking film in Kolkata."
"For us at the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata, this has been a decade-long journey of collaboration, partnerships, and support networks to combat all forms of human trafficking," Juan Clar said.
"We have been working with civil society partners and state governments for more than 10 years to create constituencies, build coalitions, and achieve results in the fight against human trafficking in east and northeast India. We are doing our bit. And we should continue to work together to end human trafficking," Clar said.
The film also featured activists Leena Kejriwal and Hasina Kharbhih. They were present during the screening of the documentary in the city.
Speaking on the challenges of filming a documentary like this one, Miriam Chandy Menacherry told IBNS: "The biggest challenge was how to represent the survivors."
"We were conscious during the filming for the film that this should be shown in India and hence we followed all the procedures needed for it," she said.
"We faced many challenges but at the end of the day we were hopefully able to give a voice to the survivors through this film," she said.
Filmmaker Sudeshna Roy, who was present at the screening of the film, said: "This is a film that actually made me think."
