As Kolkata braces up for Durga Puja, glimpses of Bonedi Baris (aristocratic families) are heart-warming
The autumn air is replete with the festive fervour of Durga Puja, Bengal’s biggest festival. However, this year it is not the same in Kolkata and Bengal with the brutal RG Kar Hospital incident and the unprecedented protests and cry for justice that followed overshadowing the festive spirit.

However, preparations are as usual and while the big and famous venues known as barowari or community pujas dominate the scene to pay obeisance to the Shakti Goddess, the old and historical venues too have continued to hold forth with their hundreds of years’s existence.

Lensman Avishek Mitra captures glimpses of pre-puja portraits of two north Kolkata family pujas- Girish Park Shymal Dhan Dutta Bari and Girish Park Raj Krishna Mitra Bari. The latter has come up with an elaborate alpona, the Bengali folk art design on the floor consisting of motifs, patterns, and symbols.
