The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the country's nodal agency to deal with cybersecurity threats, has warned people of a malicious practice named Smishing.

In an X post, the nodal agency said: "Tip of the day: Beware of smishing attacks."

It also highlighted the steps that could be taken to prevent people from becoming a victim of the attack.

What is Smishing?

According to IBM website, Smishing is a social engineering attack that uses fake mobile text messages to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information, or sending money to cybercriminals.

The term “smishing” is a combination of “SMS”—or “short message service,” the technology behind text messages—and “phishing.”

Smishing is an increasingly popular form of cybercrime.

According to Proofpoint’s 2023 State of the Phish report (link resides outside ibm.com), 76 percent of organizations experienced smishing attacks in 2022, reads the IBM website.
