India celebrates Mother's Day

| | May 11, 2014, at 05:59 pm
New Delhi, May 11 (IBNS): It is time again to dedicate the day to mothers as the world with India is not left behind in celebrating Mother's Day on Sunday.
The day witnesses honouring of mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.

Mother's Day is the occasion to make mothers realize once again the important role she plays in the life of a child in rearing him to a matured human being.

On this Mother's day, popular search engine Google on Sunday marked the day with a colourful Doodle on its homepage.

The non-interactive doodle shows a mother enjoying a bike ride with her children.

The doodle, when clicked, takes the visitor to a Google search result page for Mother's Day.

The celebration of Mother's Day began in the United States in the early 20th century. It is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally a celebration of the mother church, not motherhood). Despite this, in some countries Mother's Day has become synonymous with these older traditions.

The day provides every child an opportunity to make his/her mother feel special for the crucial role she plays in his/her life.

However, since ages, a debate prevails on whether any particular celebration is required to mark the day.

Reena Basu, a housewife in Kolkata says, "I have two daughters and I know they love me every single day of the year. I never felt the need of any particular day being dedicated to me by my daughters."

While, Swapna Bhadra, a school teacher in Asansol says, "Like we celebrate our birthday, Mother's Day is also a special day for me. My children makes me feels like an angel on this day."

Another Kusum Sinha said, “I have a son and I do not believe that there is a need to observe a day like this. I believe that this relationship is unique and unparalleled and celebrating it separately is pointless."

Similarly, children have their own views regarding this day.

Abhiroop Bhadra, a senior  Finance Professional based in Delhi says,"Well I don't feel that there should be any single day named as MOTHER"S DAY because everyday we have our mothers beside us. Without her my life would surely have  been different. I have fought with her, at times I have been real bad, but nevertheless we love each other a lot..My mother has made sacrifices for my family and especially for me so that I became what I am today."

Srijoni Basu, a class 10 student in Kolkata says, "I feel this day should be celebrated. We should make our mothers feel happy and special on this day. They spend 365 days round the year for us to become a good human being, Can't we dedicate this one day to them?"

While Maya Sen said, "I can gift my mother on any day or make her feel special everyday. So I don't believe in celebration of motherhood on any particular day."

From presenting her a small gift as a token of love to taking her out for a family dinner, one can attempt several ways to make the day really special for his mother.

Mother's Day has got a commercial angle too and various companies are banking on this opportunity to popularize their products and services, albeit with discounts and special offers.

Hotel Sahara Star, the flagship hotel of Sahara India Pariwar, recently declared a memorable treat for moms with a lavish buffet brunch hosted at its F&B outlet EarthPlate, on Sunday (May 11) to mark the Mother's Day.

Meanwhile, Arthritis Foundation of India (AFI) and Smith and Nephew have joined hands to generate awareness about osteoarthritis and associated pain to mark Mother's Day.

While children explored theirs ways to impress their mothers, celebrities took it to Twitter to express their views.

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh ‏tweeted: "On this beautiful day I pray to God. That SHE is my Mother in All My Lives. I Love You Maa. Happy Mothers Day."

Actor Rajat Kapoor ‏posted:"..and i am already sick of all the mush that is flowing towards mothers today!"
