Maha Panchami commences Durga Puja festivity
Kolkata, Sept 29 (IBNS): Finally it's time for the Bengali community across India and specially in Kolkata to take a break from their busy lives with the dawn of Monday ushering in the annual festival of the Hindus-Durga Puja amid celebrations of Maha Panchami.
The day of Maha Panchami unofficially marks the commencement of the Durga Puja.
Although going by rituals, the unveiling of Goddess Durga takes place on Maha Shashti, festive frenzy Bengalis now-a-days begin their celebrations a day before.
This year with the duration of the Durga Puja getting minimised, almost all marquees in Kolkata are ready with their idols and decorations.
Goddess Durga and along with her four children (Laxmi, Saraswati, Kartik and Ganesh) make their annual trip to maternal house on earth.
Kolkatans start 'pandalhopping' from the Maha Panchami day itself. The whole city is adorned with colourful lights from this very day.
Several marquees are inaugurated on this day by eminent personalities on this day.
As the day develops, the mood is set for the week-long festivity, which continue till Maha Dashami.
