New kid in Park Street block, Mamagoto adds to Kolkata's fine dining experience
Delectable Décor
Let me start with the décor. At the first look I was a little taken aback – it seemed we were entering a closed hall with no view and it would be claustrophobic. The huge green panda at the entrance was funny and yet a wee bit over imposing. However the small space in the ground floor led us eventually to a big dining hall and immediately I realized why Mamagoto the quirky pan Asian restaurant is loved by many across the country.
The interior is amazing, to start with. With Sumo wrestlers on the window, ping pong bats adorning a whole wall, Chinese wall hangings and imagery, to the T shirts that the staff wore which had fun messages – the décor for sure was quirky , young colourful and fun. This is not the restaurant where you would spend a quiet evening with your beloved gazing at his or her eyes – this is a restaurant where you go out with family or hang out with friends to create memories for a lifetime.
Asia in a Bowl
The menu is vast and unusual as compared to the everyday Asian restaurants. This is not the normal Chinese food you would get even at your favorite fine dining restaurant – it has the familiarity of the Chinese food with a twist that is sure to excite the palate of the well travelled Indian with the penchant for global cuisine.
We started with two mocktails – Kiwi Mint Collins, Watermelon Beach- delicious to drink but predictable in taste. Accompanied by excellent rice crispies this however made for a perfect start to our culinary journey. Next followed the starters – despite being a strict non vegetarian we decided to try out some vegetarian items well accoladed in the Zomato reviews. The item ordered on table was Crispy Lotus stems and I must say that I liked it better than honey chicken which was the other starter that we had ordered. And when in Mamagoto how can you miss out on Mamas Dumpling chicken which is quite a signature dish for the restaurant!
Given the large portion of starter we decided to try the signature bowl dishes some other day and stick to ala carte items which could be shared. For main course we decided on (after much debate and confusion) the Soggy Thai Basil Chicken Fried Rice accompanied by the signature London’s China Town Chicken which was wok tossed with crunchy green beans in ginger flavoured sauce. Tasty yet nothing special to write about this came as a mild disappointment as being foodies out in search for exotic food taste we expected a bit more. The item that followed it was pan fried sea food noodles accompanied by the fresh and hot steamed fish – The bong in me was finally satiated! Overall it was a fulfilling and a happy meal thanks to the great food quality and quirky yet cool ambience.
The Fun Ending
But wait! I have not spoken about the dessert and what is a good meal without a fine dessert. We were already overfed and full yet we decided to end it with Homemade American Style Chunky Caramel Sponge Cake with Tofee Sauce Served warm with vanilla icecream. A perfect end to a perfect meal.
{image_7}After a grand meal, when we somehow ‘rolled’ down the stairs we saw there was a huge crowd waiting to get their share of Oriental experience. Yes, this place is a must try if you are in love with oriental delights and also a must for them who have got bored with it and cannot think beyond China Town or Mainland China. This fun dining experience is sure to change your view.
