NGO launches Durga Puja guide in braille for blinds
The announcement was made at the press conference with 206 Durga Puja Committees held at Rotary Sadan on Friday in association with Office of the Commissioner of Disabilities, Dept. of Social Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal; Forum For Durgotsab; Rotary District 3291 and Ramkrishna Sangha Addyapeath Dakshineshwar.
Generally, Puja awards are judged on the parameters of glamour, splendour, artwork and visual gimmicks. But now the criterion will be different as it will also be judged on the grounds of facilities they offer to the physically challenged.
The basic requirement includes some volunteers to help the physically challenged visitors, a few wheelchairs and ramps at the entry and exit that would help to stroll with ease. Besides, presence of special entry or opening of VIP entrance & exit points and emergency management facilities will also be considered.
Speaking about the event, Debajyoti Roy, Secretary, NIP NGO said, “At the beginning of this Puja season, when everybody desires go with the impeccable mood of celebrations, we have decided to devote our self to support a unique fight for humanity, right & equality to enthral our social commitment. Even in the field of daily living activities, the Braille watch, Braille calculator, Braille thermometer, etc. have been developed with a view to provide independence to the sightless for daily use and now it's time for festive celebrations with Braille Durga Puja Guide. It's not only an event. It's not only an award ceremony or launch. Rather, it's a journey with a cordial promise to make a better society."
Binay Dubey, CEO Of B.D. Group & Shree Shoppers said, “When People with special needs don’t have to stand in long queues to enter the pandal and have direct access to the Puja premises it would really inspire the differently abled to visit the pandal and participate in the festive fervour. A little thoughtfulness can give an opportunity to people with varying abilities and disabilities to celebrate the festival with the same sense of belongingness and joy. It’s very encouraging to see many puja committees making an effort in this direction and others will soon follow.”
Pandal-hopping and viewing the differently decorated deities will not be a far-fetched dream for the differently-abled & senior citizens now and they will be able to visit the crowded pandals.
