Kolkata, Aug 2 (IBNS):Oudh 1590, India’s period dining restaurant in Kolkata, observed double celebrations when the restaurant’s first anniversary recently coincided with the 192nd birth anniversary of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruling Nawab of Awadh.

``Oudh 1590`` brings back memories of Wajid Ali Shah — the gourmet king and it was a humble initiative to introduce a true “period dining” experience recreated in today’s kitchens to be savoured at the table.

After a thorough research on this culture and cuisine for the past many years brothers Debaditya and Shiladitya Chaudhury teamed up to gift Kolkata-the city of Gourmet- a first of it’s kind Period Dining experience.

For the celebrations at the restaurant, the descendants of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, Janab Sahabzada Wasif Mirza (President of Oudh Royal Family Association), Janab Shahenshah Mirza & Janab Humayun Mirza (great great grandson of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah), classical danseuse Alokananda Roy and fashion designer Agnimitra Paul were present.

A special Shahi Tukra was prepared to commemorate the birthday of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and the best of Awadhi food was served for lunch.

The restaurant is best known for serving authentic Awadhi food and recreating that era of Awadh when it was in its peak of culture, the 1500s. The fine dining restaurant has made a place in the hearts the city residents and it has fast evolved as a destination to reckon with in just a years time.

Oudh 1590’s 1st anniversary coincided with the 192nd birth anniversary of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah.Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, by far, one of the most colorful personalities from the history of India was famous for his penchant for food, music and culture.

Nawab Wajid Ali Shah had been instrumental in holding on to the rich cultural heritage of Lucknow.

In fact, such was his love for the Awadhi Culture, that he even brought the heritage back to Metiabruz, Kolkata after he was deposed by recreating the musical environments of his Kaisarbagh Baradari.

The king spent lavishly out of his income of 12 lakh (1.2 million) rupees per annum and before long a second Lucknow arose in this area. In fact he had made a statement, when he travelled to Kolkata with a large number of Khansamas to ensure that the flavours of his food were not compromised in the least.
