Raksha Bandhan: Brothers and sisters exchange love in India
New Delhi/Kolkata, Aug 10 (IBNS): India on Sunday celebrated Raksha Bandhan with sisters tying Rakhis (sacred threads) on their brothers' wrists with prayers and love, in exchange of promises for their safety and protection.
On the sacred occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the nation.
"Greetings on the auspicious festival of Raksha Bandhan," he said in his message.
Earlier Vice President Hamid Ansari also wished the nation.
He said: "I offer my greetings and good wishes to the citizens of our country on the auspicious occasion of Rakshabandhan."
"This festival, which celebrates the sacred bond of love, care and protection between brother and sister, provides us with a happy occasion to reaffirm these traditional social values that make us better human beings," he said.
"May this festival bring peace, love and amity in the society," his message said.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who tied Rakhi to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, wished all saying: "Heartiest greetings and best wishes to all my brothers and sisters."
"Incidentally, Shah Rukh is present today with us in Kolkata Police - Star Jalsha 'Jai He' programme at Netaji Indoor Stadium. We celebrated 'Raksha Bandhan' on the occasion," she posted on her Facebook page.
"May the sweet bond between brothers and sisters be perpetual and usher in happiness, peace and prosperity in your lives," she said.
The Rakhi festival, which is also known as Raksha Bandhan, celebrates the bond of a brother and his sister.
The festival carries lots of emotions like trust, love and commitment, which are exchanged among siblings.
Interestingly, the festival is celebrated by multiple religious communities like Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims all over the world.
The ceremony involves the tying of a rakhi by a sister on her brother's wrist that symbolises her love and prayer for her brother's good health and prosperity. On the other hand, the brother takes the lifelong vow to protect her.
Shopping rushes were widely witnessed prior to the occasion as brothers strived hard to bring the best of gifts for their sisters.
Sweets are a must on this day, as the custom is celebrated with sweets and other savouries.
As consumerism paved its way, several companies banked on the occasion to make the most of it.
Jewellery maker Forevermark introduced a special collection pendants to cash in on the occasion.
Celebrities and politicians also took it to Twitter to wish the netizens.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan tweeted: "Greetings on the auspicious festival of Rakshabandhan - symbol of invincible bond between brothers and sisters of the world."
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje tweeted: "A sacred thread embellished with affection - celebration of the Brother-Sister bond. Greetings on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
Actor Ranganathan Madhavan posted: "To all the brothers and their sisters a very HAPPY RAKSHABANDHAN."
Actress Dia Mirza tweeted: "Sisters tie a #Rakhi to one another :) #Rakshabandhan"
Tollywood actress Nusrat tweeted: "Day of brothr-sisterly love..lets all join hands frgettin all barriers..n move frwrd towards a bettr world tgethr..! Happy raksha bandhan."
