Kolkata, July 1 (IBNS): Oxford University Press, in association with Rabindranath Tagore Centre, ICCR, Kolkata, released the English translation of Rabindranath Tagore's humorous and widely-acclaimed Bengali play 'Chirakumar Sabha' recently.

Sushanta Dattagupta, Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati University and Suranjan Das, Vice-Chancellor of University of Calcutta were present at the event.

Translated by Sukhendu Ray, a well-known translator of Bengali literary works into English, “Chirakumar Sabha -The Bachelor’s Club: A Comedy in Five Acts” is a hilarious account of a group of bachelors who eventually get married.

“To non-Bengali speaking people Rabindranath Tagore is known through translations of his poetical works, and some of his fictions and short stories. His work for the theatre is relatively less-known with the exception of a few. ‘Chirakumar Sabha’ remains one of my favourite plays. I am particularly pleased that it is published by Oxford University Press and hope that it will reach the non-Bengali speaking population interested in literature,” said Sukhendu Ray.

Ranjan Kaul, Managing Director, Oxford University Press India, said,“I am delighted that OUP India has brought out the English translation of the renowned Bengali play ‘Chirakumar Sabha’ by Rabindranath Tagore, thereby making this great work of literature from the early nineteenth century accessible to a much wider audience. I would like to congratulate Sukhendu Ray and OUP’s academic editorial team on this stupendous effort that furthers the creative legacy of Rabindranath Tagore.”

The translation of the original masterpiece helps the readers connect to the thoughts and worksof Rabindranath Tagore, the quintessential playwright.
