Things to Consider Before Installing Home Security Screen

| @indiablooms | Jul 25, 2018, at 11:55 am

Installing a screen door helps protect your home, family and pets from harsh weather and prying eyes, and adds to your safety. Here are some things you need to think about before you install a security screen door:

Whom or From Where to Buy From

It’s a good idea to buy locally – either a local manufacturer, or a distributor with a good reputation. Be wary of purchasing cheap imports; they are likely to be of low quality and not durable either, and may even be old or reused products.  Check out for reputed security screen mesh suppliers that you’re going to buy from – search online for reviews left by previous customers, and ask friends and family for recommendations, if they have recently installed screen doors. You can try and find out how long the company has been operating, how many employees they have, and whether they are licensed  and insured.

Servicing

Ask your supplier or dealer who will be responsible for servicing your door in case the need arises sometime in the future. Will the company still be in existence a few years down the line? You may need to consider these factors.

Warranty

Enquire about the warranty, and whether it is included in the price you pay at the time of purchase.  Make sure you read the fine print, and ask for more details if you are not clear about any of the clauses of the warranty. You can also ask if the manufacturer or supplier is willing to give you an extended warranty. You may need to pay a little extra for that, but it’s worth the money.

Installation Method

There are different installation methods for screen doors; make sure you choose the method that will provide added security for your family. Tube-frame mounting and flush mounting are two of the best methods. The screen door kind of recedes into the inner door, making the exposed surface smooth, and removing gaps to lend a natural appearance. With frame mounting your door will stick out – a few inches from the door opening may be out. But it provides more security; ensure that you use a different steel frame if you are going to do a frame mounting installation.

Material for the Door Frame

Security doors are available in all kinds of material - wood, aluminum, steel, metal alloy, and so on, so you have a wide choice. Make sure that the material you choose is solid and sturdy, and offers protection. If it’s wood, broaden the frame a bit to fortify it; steel doors may need powder coating to prevent rusting and corrosion. Aluminum is sturdy and doesn’t rust, but it is likely to cost you more than the other options.

Can the Door be Customized?

This is something you will need to specifically ask the supplier. Ask if you have the option to customize it without voiding the warranty. You may need to customize it for security reasons or to increase the aesthetics of the door. For example, you may want to install sensors, window film, or a slide-locking bar. Be sure to get this clarified before you actually go about adding your stuff on it.

Climatic Conditions

How is the climate in your area? The durability of your security door will depend to a great extent on the weather conditions. Ideally, you need to choose a door that will survive the elements in your region. In places with harsh winters, you may need to choose materials that are more durable and prevent heat loss, like a triple-paned glass or fiberglass coated with vinyl.
