Model Code: Kejriwal to reply to EC notice today

India Blooms News Service (IBNS) | | 13 May 2014, 09:21 am
New Delhi, May 13 (IBNS) Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and Varanasi Lok Sabha candidate Arvind Kejriwal is likely to reply to a notice issued by the Election Commission (EC) for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct through his speech at Amethi in Uttar Pradesh recently.

The EC on Sunday slapped the notice on Kejriwal.

Kejriwal reportedly said on May 2 in Amethi that anyone voting for Congress or BJP would be betraying the nation and God.

Reacting to a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vivek Goyal, the EC said: "Whereas, the Commission is, prima facie' of the opinion that by making the aforesaid statements you have violated the above said provisions of Model Code of Conduct."

"Now  therefore, the commission gives you an opportunity to explain your stand in making the above said statements before 5 pm on 13th May, 2014,failing which the ECI shall take a deeision without further reference to you," the EC said.

Amethi is a Gandhi family bastion from where Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi fought the polls pitted against AAP candidate Kumar Viswas and BJP candidate Smriti Irani this time, both seen as powerful challengers of the Gandhi influence in the region.
