Chennai: The railway officials have found the reason behind the Darbhanga Bagmati Express collision with a goods train, media reports said.

Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Anant Madhukar Chowdhary, conducted an inspection of the accident site to determine the precise cause of the incident and gather insights for future safety improvements. Sniffer dogs were also brought in as part of the investigation, reported India Today.

The express train collided with a stationary goods train near Chennai on Friday evening, injuring at least 19 people and causing the derailment of 13 coaches, according to officials.

The impact of the crash also led to two coaches catching fire. The accident took place at Tamil Nadu's Kavaraipettai railway station in Tiruvallur district, near Chennai.

“The train was headed towards Gudur and further to Andhra Pradesh. At the station, a goods train headed towards Gudur was stationed on the loop line and was given priority. It was supposed to pass through the main line but despite the signal for the main line, the train entered the loop line. It hit the goods train from behind and the engine derailed," R N Singh, General Manager of Southern Railway, was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Officials reported that the train crew experienced a heavy jerk before the train entered the loop line.

Both the pilot and loco pilot were found to be in good health. In response to the incident, several trains were either immediately diverted, rescheduled, or cancelled.

A total of 18 scheduled trains have been cancelled for October 12.

The railway authorities have ordered a high-level inquiry into the accident to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.

The passenger train was travelling at 75 km/h, collided with a stationary goods train on Friday at around 8:30 p.m. in Tamil Nadu.

The train entered a loop line instead of the main track, causing at least 12 coaches to derail and leaving multiple passengers injured, according to railway officials.

A power car also caught fire during the incident.

Tiruvallur District Collector Dr. T. Prabhushankar confirmed that 1,360 passengers were aboard the train at the time of the accident, according to the report.

Among the 19 reported injured, four sustained serious injuries and were quickly taken to a nearby hospital. No casualties have been reported so far.

After midnight, stranded passengers were transported by MTC buses to Dr. MGR Chennai Central railway station.

In the early hours of the morning, a special train departed from Dr. MGR Chennai Central, ensuring the remaining passengers could continue their journey. Food and water were provided to those affected.
