Hyderabad/IBNS: After Karnataka, Telangana is set to become the second Congress-ruled state to undertake a caste census, expected to be carried out from November 6-30, media reports said.

Acting on the orders from the High Court, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ordered the constitution of a Backwards Castes commission.

The High Court wants the new commission to allot a quota for them in the local bodies' election.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Telangana on Tuesday to attend a caste census programme.

Rahul Gandhi is expected to meet associations, student organisations and intellectuals to take their views on the matter, NDTV reported.

The previous panel of backward castes was based on a 1993 law.

It was constituted to just gather data on education and employment quota.

This time, the census will gather the socioeconomic profile of all castes, NDTV quoting sources reported.

The government will reportedly employ 48,000 teachers to conduct the survey, for which primary schools will operate half-day this month.

The teachers will conduct house-to-house surveys to collect data. The government staff will place stickers on doors surveyed There will be 85,000 enumerators and observers, said reports.
