Prayagraj: The government is looking into the issue of Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship in response to Allahabad High Court’s query in connection with a petition filed by S Vignesh Shishir, a resident of Karnataka, media reports said.

In his petition, Shishir claimed that Gandhi is also a citizen of the UK, and given that, his Indian citizenship be cancelled.

He has also sought a CBI probe into the matter.

Additional Solicitor General S.B. Pandey has been directed to seek instructions from the Union Home Ministry within three weeks and present its response at the next hearing.

The Union Home Ministry stated, "The representation submitted by the petitioner has been received and is under process. This matter is listed for December 19, 2024. The outcome of the representation will be conveyed to the Court on the next hearing date."

Vignesh told NDTV that the court has mandated that a clear and final decision must be made by December 19, the date of the next hearing.

The home ministry is also required to report its findings to the court, he said.

He hoped that the government acts swiftly to revoke Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship.

"We have received direct confirmation from the UK government that Gandhi is listed in their citizenship records," he said, according to the report.

"We have submitted all relevant documents to the Allahabad High Court. Under Indian law, dual citizenship is not permitted. Once someone acquires citizenship of another country, their Indian citizenship is automatically cancelled," he added.
