Another Assam Congress MLA arrested, sent to 7-day custody

Guwahati, Apr 30 (IBNS): After Dr Rumi Nath, police on Thursday arrested another Congress MLA and sent him to seven days judicial custody.
Assam Congress MLA and former minister of Tarun Gogoi led state government Siddique Ahmed, who was allegedly absconding for last several weeks in connection with an assault case of 2011, was arrested by police in his hometown Karimganj.
 
The Congress legislator of Karimganj (South) constituency on Thursday turned up in Karimganj Chief Judicial magistrate seeking bail in the assault case but the additional magistrate has turned down his bail plea and sent him to seven days judicial custody.
 
Several supporters of the Congress MLA have protested against the court order.
 
At least 14 persons were injured in the clash between police and supporters of the Congress MLA.
 
"We were forced to resort to lathi charge to control the situation, " a top police official said.
 
A case was registered against the Congress legislator for an alleged attempt to murder Rezaul Karim in 2011.
 
The former minister of Tarun Gogoi led Assam government Siddique Ahmed was dropped from the ministry in 2014.
 
Police had earlier launched search operation in MLA hostel in Guwahati  after issued warrant against Siddique Ahmed.
 
On April 14, police had arrested Assam Congress MLA of Borkhola constituency Dr Rumi Nath from the MLA hostel for her alleged link with auto theft racket.
