Modi condemns Manipur ambush, Rajnath chairs high-level meeting

New Delhi, June 4 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condemned the attack in Manipur which left at least 21 army personnel killed and 10 others injured.
"Today’s mindless attack in Manipur is very distressing. I bow to each and every soldier who has sacrificed his life for the Nation," the Prime Minister said.
Following the attack, Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a high-level meeting that was attended by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikkar and Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag along with NSA Ajit Doval to take stock of the situation.
The government has reportedly decided to seal the India-Myanmar border in Manipur and deploy more forces to intensify operations in the area.
Parrikar has also condemned the attack on the Army personnel in Manipur and assured that those who have committed this cowardly act will be brought to book.
He said the Army will continue to work towards bringing peace and normalcy to the State.
The Minister has conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the brave Army men who lost their lives today.
This comes after at least 21 army personnel were killed and 10 others were injured in an deadly ambush by militants in their convoy in Manipur's Chandel district on Thursday morning, officials said.
The ambush took place between the area of Paralong and Charong, about 30 kms from Imphal.
The soldiers belonged to the 6 Dogra Infantry Regiment. The convoy of four vehicles headed from Motul to Imphal was ambushed by the militants.
The militants had triggered a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the remote area and attacked on the convoy with RPG launchers and automatic weapons.
The injured jawans have been airlifted by army chopper and taken to the base hospital for treatment.
On other hand, a top official of Manipur police said that, the militants of People's Liberation Army of Manipur (PLA) and United National Liberation Front (UNLF) are behind the attack.
Top police and army officials had rushed to the area and launched operation against the attackers.
