Congress wins Meghalaya by-poll
Congress candidate Bluebell Sangma defeated her nearest rival Pillipole D Marak of the National People's Party by margin of 2550 votes in the by-election of Chokpot assembly constituency.
State election commissioner said that the by-poll was necessitated following the death of Clifford R Marak, MLA of Garo National Council.
Bluebell Sangma secured 8042 votes while Pillipole received 5492 votes.
Clifford R Marak's wife Kalpana D Sangma, candidate of Garo National Council secured 5009 votes while Independent candidate Tinkerwin R Marak received 1189 votes.
Bluebell Sangma, a former member of Nationalist Congress Party, joined the Congress party before the by-poll.
The by-poll was held on June 27 with turnout of 83.11 percent of the 24244 electorate.
In the 60-member Meghalaya assembly, now Congress has 30 seats.
11 Independent MLA'S, two members of Nationalist Congress Party, one member of North East Democratic Socialist Party had supported to the Dr Mukul Sangma led Congress government of Meghalaya.
