Congress-sponsored shutdown in Bengal evokes partial response
The shutdown was called in protest against the alleged killing of a student in a West Midnapore college and "terror and violence" by the ruling party.
Opposing it, the state government announced yesterday that all its offices would remain open and employees should report for duty.
The strike did not have a major impact in Kolkata where most of the shops and markets remained open while state-run buses plied normally.
Local train services were disrupted in certain sections of Sealdah division of Eastern Railways after Congress supporters squatted on tracks. As a result, several trains were held up.
In certain districts the bandh had some impact.
