Urban development is opportunity, not challenge: PM Modi at Amaravati ceremony
Amaravati, AP, Oct 22 (IBNS): Amid fanfare, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday laid the foundation stone of Amaravati, the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh, touted as the People's Capital, saying the initiative should be taken up as an opportunity and not challenge.
Amid cheers and songs and rituals, the PM laid the foundation stone. Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu was also accompanying him.
He said the frequency between Naidu and the Government of India matches:
"Be it AP or Telangana, the soul is Telugu. Both states must progress. When I read that Naidu met Telangana CM & invited him I was very happy. I congratulate Naidu n for this," said the PM.
"We should consider urban development as an opportunity not as a challenge," said the PM at the ceremony.
The way Naidu took up work on this (new capital) and integrated whatever is best across the world, he must be congratulated, said the PM.
"This is on the way to becoming a people's capital. I congratulate the people and Government of the state. Today Andhra Pradesh is taking a very important step," said Modi.
Modi was on a day long visit to the state.
Earlier, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu tweeted: "A day when millions across the globe will watch #Amaravati's birth has arrived. Let's build #ManaAmaravatiManaRajadhani together."
A dream project of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who leads the Telugu Desam Party-BJP government in Andhra Pradesh, the CM said he will work towards making a great capital city with discipline and culture.
The event was streamed live.
The master plan of Amaravati was designed by the Singapore government. The city will cover an area of 217 sq. km. between Vijayawada and Guntur towns.
A new capital of Andhra Pradesh was necessitated after the creation of Telangana with the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. The present capital Hyderabad, which is now a joint capital of Telangana and residuary AP, will go to Telangana in 2024.
