The plane crashed in a field at Mirhama in Bijbehara of South Kashmir's Anantnag district.
"One MiG-21 (Bis) Aircraft of the IAF crashed about 10 Kms short of Awantipur Airbase on 27 May 2014 at about 1048 hrs," said an IAF release.
"The Pilot airborne from Srinagar was on a routine training sortie. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate into the cause of the accident," it said.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah earlier tweeted: "Reports coming in of a Mig fighter having crashed in South Kashmir. Hope the pilot & the people on the ground are safe #prayers".
