Banning Salman Rushdie's book was wrong: P Chidambaram

India Blooms News Service | | 29 Nov 2015, 09:29 am
New Delhi, Nov 29 (IBNS): Former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram said banning writer Salman Rushdie's novel 'The Satanic Verses' during the tenure of ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi-led government was 'wrong'.

Speaking at the Times LitFest in Delhi, Chidambaram said: "I have no hesitation in saying that the ban on Salman Rushdie's book was wrong."

Reacting sharply to Chidambaram's remark, Rushdie tweeted: "This admission just took 27 years. How many more before the "mistake" is corrected? "

Following a fatwa (decree)  issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran, the book was banned.
