Park Street rape: Kolkata Police to move to High Court
Kolkata, Dec 21 (IBNS): Challenging the sessions court's verdict and appealing to increase the punishment of the three convicts in the Park Street rape case, the Kolkata Police will be moving to the Calcutta High Court very soon, police sources said on Monday.
According to sources, the Kolkata Police will appeal to the state's apex court by Dec 25, appealing the capital punishment for the convicted.
After convicting them under IPC section 376 (2g), a sessions court in Kolkata on Dec 11 sentenced the three accused- Nasir Khan, Ruman Khan and Sumit Bajaj- for ten years imprisonment, which is the lowest punishment under this section.
Challenging the punishment and demanding lifetime imprisonment for the convicted trio, the family of Park Street rape victim will move to the Calcutta High Court soon, their lawyer Anirban Guha Thakurata told IBNS.
Suzette Jordan, who later became a symbol of anti-rape protest, was gang-raped at gunpoint inside a car by some youths who befriended her in a night joint on Feb 5-6 in 2012.
While the incident had triggered a civil society outrage after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called it a fabricated case aimed at maligning her government, the law finally caught up with three of the accused.
However, main accused Kader Khan remained a fugitive along with another offender, Ali.
Creating a major movement in the society , Suzette, the mother of two, revealed her identity to the world on June 19, 2013 and marched on the streets of Kolkata to protest against a series of rapes and murders in the state.
However, the rape-survivor died from meningitis at a hospital in Kolkata on Mar 13 this year.
