Fresh agitation in Hyderabad University, several students arrested

Hyderabad, Apr. 6 (IBNS) Police arrested several students as fresh protests broke out inside and outside the Hyderabad Central University on Wednesday protesting Principal Appa Rao's move to appoint an ombudsman and demanding a thorough probe into the death of Rohit Vemula, the Dalit research scholar who had committed suicide.

Reports said the incident occurred when a meeting of the University's Academic Council was going on to appoint an ombudsman in accordance with a court order.

However, agitating students protested, saying the VC, whose removal they had been demanding owning responsibility of Vemula's death, has no right to appoint an ombudsman.

Police forced several students, including females, into vans and whisked them away from the spot.

The varsity was hit by protests over suicide by  Rohith Vemula earlier this year. The fierce agitation by students which had its effects elsewhere in the country, turned more intense after the VC resumed duty after a two-month leave.
