Kerala temple fire: At least 90 killed, PM to travel to scene

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 10 (IBNS) The scene turned ghastly for devotees in a temple in Kerala's Kollam district on Sunday morning as fire engulfed at least 90 lives, leaving around 350 more injured, according to reports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had earlier termed the incident heart-rending and shocking, thorough a tweet, said he will reach the spot.

"I will be reaching Kerala soon to take stock of the situation arising due to the unfortunate fire tragedy in Kollam," Modi tweeted.

The PMO in a statement said that the Prime Minister is taking a note of the situation and is deeply aggrieved by the tragedy.

Though the primary reason of the breakage has not yet been confirmed, reports of a celebrations at wee hours being the culprit is doing the rounds.

NDTV quoted a police official as saying, "A spark from the crackers being burst fell into the stack of crackers kept in a makeshift compartment at the ground, triggering the fire. The space was an open group and people could run away."

Around 15,000 people were present when the fire started.
