Most wanted ULFA (I) militant killed in Assam encounter

Guwahati, Apr 27 (IBNS): A most wanted militant belonging to ULFA(I) was gunned down by the army in an encounter in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district on Wednesday, officials said.
According to the reports, the encounter took place at Talapathar area, a remote village in the oil riched Upper Assam district at around 3 AM on Wednesday.
 
Based on intelligence input about the presence of a militant group at the remote area, the army launched an operation and killed a wanted militant during gun battle.
 
The slain militant was identified as Rongmon Asom alias Mecuri.
 
“The slain militant was involved several attacks in Upper Assam,” an army official said.
 
Security personnel recovered an AK-81 rifle with a magazine, several rounds of live ammunition and other items from the militant.
 
“Self Styled Sergeant Major Rongmon  Asom alias Mecuri was a dreaded ULFA(I) senior leader who led a group of terrorists and  was active in upper Assam since a long time. He was actively involved in killing, extortion activities in the area,” the official said.
