Burdwan, May 15 (IBNS): At least five people went missing after a boat carrying more than 100 people capsized in Bhagirathi River in West Bengal's Burdwan district on Saturday, reports said.

Locals reportedly protested over the incident as they alleged that rescue operations started late.

The demonstrators reportedly pelted stone on the police.

They also set several boats on fire.

The police brought the situation under control by reportedly  resorting to mild lathicharge and using tear gas shells.

CPI-M leader Surjya Kanta Mishra protested against the police action and tweeted: "Speeding up of rescue operations @Kalna-Santipur boat drowning site is urgent. Tear gas&fire no solution!!Join&Help rescue efforts&work!!"
