Punjab : Controversy refuses to leave Congress as it appoints Asha Kumari in place of Kamal Nath

Chandigarh, June 27 (IBNS) Controversy continues to dog the Congress over its choice of leader for poll-bound Punjab as the party appoints Asha Kumari, an MLA from Himachal Pradesh, to replace Kamal Nath as the general secretary in-charge of the state.

A former education minister of the state, Asha Kumari was convicted in a land grab case and given one-year imprisonment by a Chamba court in February and is currently out on bail.

Kamal Nath had resigned following an uproar by BJP, SAD and AAP over his alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Following Asha Kumari's appointment on Sunday,  AAP slammed the decision saying the party was not serious about getting rid of corruption in the state.

“By appointing Asha Kumari as Punjab incharge, Congress party has proved they are not serious about getting rid of corruption in the state... After tainted Kamal Nath, her appointment shows Congress is short of clean leaders,” AAP’s Rajouri Garden MLA Jarnail Singh said.

Punjab BJP leader Vineet Joshi said the appointment was “unfortunate and disgusting”.

“First it was Kamal Nath and now Asha Kumari, who has been sentenced 1-year jail by court in a case of land grab that too recently. I think they don’t have good leaders,” he said.
