South Africa is the birthplace of Satyagraha: PM Modi to Indian diaspora in Johannesburg

Johannesburg, July 8 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the Indian Community in Johanesburg during his visit to South Africa said it was here that Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi conceptualised politics and that the country is the birthplace of 'Satyagraha' movement.
Amid a grand welcome extended out to Modi at the Johannesburg stadium, the Indian PM said: "This city and it's people mean a lot to us."
 
"It was here that Mahatma Gandhi conceptualised politics. This is the birth place of Satyagraha," he said.
 
"It was here that Mohandas became Mahatma," said he.
 
Remembering South Africa's past, Modi said, "When I look at you, I am reminded of the suffering and bravery of your ancestors."
 
Speaking about India's ties with South Africa, the Indian PM said: "India was first to embrace South Africa after it shunned apartheid."
 
Reflecting on the contribution of Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, he said these two men have an been an inspiration for both countries.
 
"Mahatma Gandhi held South Africa dear to his heart," said the Indian PM.
 
Amid 'Modi Modi' chants, he urged Indians living in South Africa to visit India and witness it's transformation. 
 
Modi said both the countries have common heritage which keeps them connected.
 
He said India is witnessing a wave of new momentum.
 
"The cities are filled with energy and enterprise," said he.
 
"India is a land of opportunity for those who want to innovate and create, trade and invest," said he.
 
Modi said India's success story can be described through only four letters- 'HOPE'- where H stands for 'Harmony', 'O' for 'Optimism, 'P' for 'Purpose' and 'E' for 'Energy.'
 
He said  these two countries have similar aspirations and challenges.
 
"Indian and South Africa are strategic partners," said Modi adding: "A partnership that scales new heights in diverse fields."
 
Lauding the country to have achieved so much, Modi said the people of the South Africa makes him proud.
 
The PM concluded his speech by inviting Indians residing in South Africa to connect to him through his app and on social media.
