During an event in the city, Subrata Mukherjee said, "Nowadays, Jadavpur University's standard is becoming low and several socially non-recognized activities are being done there inside the campus."

"Sometimes I think that the university should be kept closed for at least three years," Mukherjee further said.

Subrata Mukherjee also said that city's another iconic university Presidency University's standard was falling down.

Faculties, alumnus and pupils of Jadavpur University, which was rated with highest grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC), expressed protest over the controversial statement.
