Iraq crisis: Sushma holds meeting with Gulf envoys

New Delhi, June 29 (IBNS): Amid the Iraq crisis which also affected India and put its nationals there at risk after several, many of them nurses, were taken hostages by the rebel group, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday held a high-level meeting with Indian envoys posted in several Gulf countries.


Several other government officials were also present in the meeting. Reports said National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth were also present.

Some 39 Indians are still held captive by the rebel group Islamic State of Iraqand the Levant (ISIS) in Iraq.
 
The Indian Embassy in Baghdad has opened camp offices in Najaf, Karbala and Basra for assisting Indians nationals in Iraq.

India on Saturday said less than 100 people are present in the conflict zone in Iraq.

"We can say that less than 100 people are present there," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said while addressing a press conference here.

He said the Indians, who were held captive in the nation, remained 'unharmed'.

"Those Indians remain in captivity. But we have information that they remain unharm..We are extremely careful and pursuing the matter step by step," he said.

He said India has set up three camp offices to facilitate departure of 10,000 nationals from non-conflicting zones in Iraq.

He said the Indian officials are in touch with the 46 nurses who are stranded in Iraqi city Tirkit.

Denying reports of any explosion in the compound where the nurses are staying, he said: "There have not been any  explosion in their compound."

All Indian nationals requiring assistance in returning to India may contact the Indian Embassy officials at the station nearest to their location as indicated above. All necessary assistance, including provision of travel documents, air tickets and facilitation in any other form for travel out of Iraq, will be provided to those Indian nationals desirous of returning back to India.
