Vientiane/New Delhi, Sep 8 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking at the 11th East Asia Summit in Vientiane, Laos, on Thursday, said that competing geo-politics, as well as traditional and non-traditional challenges threaten peace, stability and prosperity of the region.

Talking against terrorism, the PM said terrorism is the most serious challenge to open and pluralistic societies and combating it would require collective effort.

“There's one country in our neighbourhood whose competitive advantage rests solely in producing and exporting terrorism. This export is reducing space for peace  and increasing space for violence and, putting at risk peace and prosperity of all," the PM said.

Outlining India's principled position on the South China Sea, the PM stated India can share expertise and build partnerships for protection of marine resources, prevent environment degradation and tap blue economy.

He also said that natural disasters were a prime concern and announced India's initiatives to help devise coordinated approaches and responses.

Modi reiterated that India is committed to supporting realization of RCEP and India can also play an important role in APEC for deepening ongoing economic integration in the region.

Talking about non-proliferation in the region, PM Modi said India remains committed, including through membership of export control regimes and to pursuing total and verifiable elimination of weapons of mass destruction.

PM Narendra Modi said India will remain steadfast in shared pursuit of regional, strategic political and economic priorities within EAS framework.
