Shahabuddin bail case: It's likely to be Prashant Bhushan vs Jethmalani in SC
Media reports said Shahabuddin urgently requires the support of Jethmalani to counter another prominent lawyer Prashant Bhushan who has challenged his bail in the Supreme Court citing RJD strongman’s “long criminal antecedent”.
Jethhmalani who is a Rajya Sabha member elected on RJD’s ticket is presently pleading party supremo Lalu Prasad’s case in the multi-million dollar fodder scam and Shahabuddin said to be being “so close” to the party boss hopes to get the legal support of the eminent lawyer.
“Shahabuddin has approached Jethamalani and the latter office has reportedly given its nod to take up his case,” a local TV News Channel ETV reported on Thursday.
Bihar’s deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav declined to comment over the issue. “Who is hiring which lawyer is not at all important as it doesn’t help the youth or development of the State. This is irrelevant,” asked Tejashwi whos is son of RJD chief Prasad.
Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi has dared chief minister Nitish Kumar to prevent RJD parliamentarian Jethamalani from fighting Shahabuddin’s case.
Shahabuddin turned to eminent lawyer after the apex court issued a notice to the former, asking him to reply within a week why the bail granted to him should not be cancelled. The next hearing is scheduled for 26 September.
The SC notice was issued after another prominent lawyer Prashant Bhushan challenged Shahabuddin’s bail in the court, seeking immediate cancelation of bail citing his long criminal past. The Bihar government has also moved the apex court, challenging his bail on similar grounds.
The criminal-turned-politician walked out of jail on Sept 10 after the bail was granted by the Patna High Court.
Soon after his release, the entire opposition has taken to streets, strongly opposing his release from jail and seeking his immediate shifting to jail again. The NDA has submitted memorandum to the Governor, staged dharanas and held protest rallies, demanding his immediate bail cancellation.
Apparently, all these developments have unnerved Shahabuddin who now wants a “suitable” lawyer to strongly plead his case in the Supreme Court lest he could be sent back to jail again. Shahabuddin has come out of jail after 11 years.
