Maldives says it will not attend the SAARC summit in Islamabad

India Blooms News Service | | 01 Oct 2016, 02:45 pm
New Delhi, Oct 1 (IBNS): Maldives too has decided not to participate in the SAARC Summit scheduled to be held in Pakistan, thus joining Bangaldesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and of course India, according to media reports on Saturday.

The nation denounced terrorism and said that a conducive environment has to be created for holding the summit, which was scheduled to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan, in November.

The unprecedented boycott of the summit follows India's announcement of diplomatically isolating Pakistan, which it blames for harbouring terrorists including those who struck the Army base in Uri earlier in September killing 20 soldiers, reported NDTV.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, Pakistan has said it will announce new dates for the summit following the boycott by several nations.

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, better known as SAARC, consists of  Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
