Guwahati, Oct 1 (IBNS) : Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged students of the state to strive for becoming good citizens with human values along with excelling in studies.

Speaking on Saturday at the function held for felicitating the rank holders in HSLC and HSSLC of the St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School in Guwahati, the Assam CM advised the students to consider this period of their lives as golden period and use it for building character and imbibing humane values.

Recalling his own school days, Sonowal said that his days at Don Bosco School, Dibrugarh have a profound impact in shaping his personality and character.

Urging the students to take moral education very seriously to inculcate a clear conscientious thinking ability and build a strong character, the Assam CM said that the young students must aim for becoming good citizens and contribute towards nation building.

Reiterating that the students need to engage in sports and physical activity, Sonowal said that excelling in sports is as important as doing well in studies.

Citing the examples of Olympians Dipa Karmakar and Mary Kom from the northeast region, Sonowal said that girl students must aspire for sporting excellence and should not feel inferior to anyone in any field of life.

“The government is going to build the state as a sporting hub of the nation as there is abundance of sporting talent which needs to be exploited to the fullest,” Sonowal said.

Saying that the government is committed for women empowerment, the Assam CM urged the girl students to aim for excelling in every field and not to limit their aspirations.

Sonowal said they must work hard to bring tangible change to the society and impact their surroundings in a positive way.

Lauding the St. Mary’s HS School for maintaining quality in education the Assam CM wished the rank holders in HSLC and HSSLC of the school a great future and urged them to be inspiration for the future generations of students.

The school students also presented a colorful cultural performance on the occasion.
