Patna, Oct 1 (The Bihar Post/IBNS): Tension has gripped Jharkhand after four villagers were allegedly killed in a police firing on Saturday morning.

The incident took place after the police tried to arrest a Congress lawmaker Nirmala Devi protesting acquisition of land for a National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) project at Badkagaon village in Hazaribagh district.

As the news of her arrest spread the areas, angry villagers surrounded the police force and pelted stones on them in a bid to free the lawmaker, leading to violent protests.

Eventually, the police opened fire on the unruly mob, killing four of them on the spot and wounding scores of others.

“Four persons have been killed in the firing. We are trying to defuse tension in the areas,” a local Jharkhand police spokesperson MS Bhatia told the media today.
