Kolkata: Illegal gas cylinder storage catches fire, 3 killed

Kolkata, Oct 6 (IBNS): A major fire broke out in a warehouse, filled with gas cylinders, at Tangra Christopher Road area in Kolkata on Thursday which left at least three people dead, reports said.


According to reports, the fire was first seen in the afternoon and it spread very fast as several flammable objects, including gas cylinders, petrol and kerosene, were stored inside the godown.

Several explosions were heard from the warehouse after the fire started, according to eyewitness accounts.

As the storehouse is located at a congested zone, the incident triggered a huge panic among the locals.

As many as five fire tender engines, police force from local police station and Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel rushed to the spot and firemen fought for hours to bring the massive blaze under control.

After dousing the fire, police recovered at least three burned bodies from the warehouse.

Two bodies have been identified as that of  Ram Abtar Agarwal, who was the owner of the storehouse, and his brother Pawan Kumar Agarwal, while the third one has not been identified so far.

After starting investigation into the case, police officials said that the warehouse authority did not have any license or permission to run their business and store gas cylinders there.

The exact reason behind the fire has not been confirmed so far.
